Cities are experimenting with ways of reintroducing nature to be resilient to the rising tides, floods, and extreme weather events caused by climate change. Along urban coastlines, restored wetlands, constructed oyster reefs, and ecotone levees provide critical habitat for birds, bivalves and other species–while buffering severe storms. In urban watersheds, expanding the floodplains of creeks, streams and rivers diversifies ecosystems as fish, fowl and fauna have room to thrive. Nature-based approaches are creating space for wildlife and natural ecosystems in cities while adapting to the challenges facing urban populations. This panel will bring together experts in science, community organizing, and design in a discussion about nature-based adaptation solutions.
